The Scent That Returned Before Autumn
The Hearth Room Journal
The House always knows when autumn is approaching.
Not by the calendar.
Nor by the changing leaves.
It knows by fragrance.
This morning, while arranging dried lavender within the Apothecary, I caught the faintest trace of something that did not belong to summer.
It was gone almost as quickly as it arrived.
Warm cedar.
A whisper of bergamot.
Something darker beneath it.
Old paper, perhaps.
Or polished oak after rain.
I stood very still.
The Apothecary shelves held only the fragrances prepared for the season.
Nothing should have carried that particular scent.
Yet the House seemed entirely unsurprised.
Later, when I mentioned it to Elias as we walked through the gardens, he simply smiled.
"The House always prepares before we do."
No further explanation followed.
None was needed.
The gardens still bloomed in summer's colors.
The roses had not yet begun to rest.
The lavender remained heavy with bees.
And yet...
somewhere within the House...
autumn had already arrived.
I have learned not to question these quiet arrivals.
The House has always remembered the seasons long before the rest of us.
Perhaps memory blooms in its own time.
Or perhaps fragrance simply knows the way home before we do.
This evening, as I extinguished the candles within the Apothecary, the scent returned once more.
Only for a moment.
Long enough to remind me...
that some seasons begin long before they appear.
